Surgeon
Surgeon has been at the forefront of UK techno since 1992.
His debut EP is regarded by many as seminal, launching his career along with several early Downwards releases. Surgeon has been prolific since, with albums on Tresor and numerous Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension EPs, as well as his 'Breaking The Frame’, ‘From Farthest Known Objects’ and ‘Luminosity Device’ LPs.
“Over the course of his career, the Birmingham resident has perfected a unique and uncommonly effective production style. His sound is tough techno with industrial murk, funk, swing, and a sophisticated sense of dub-space. Proving that hard can also be smart, sensuous and danceable, Surgeon’s influence on the Ostgut/Berghain sound – DJs like Marcel Dettmann, Shed et al – is substantial.” (Fact Magazine)
Surgeon is renowned for his live modular performances, where he creates raw, unfiltered techno in real time using modular synthesis. His live shows are a deeply immersive experience, with improvisation and spontaneous composition at the core of his performances, pushing techno into uncharted territories.
Beyond his productions, Surgeon’s remix CV includes collaborations with names like Dave Clarke, Luke Slater/PAS, Green Velvet, and Thom Yorke (Radiohead). He is also the co-creator of the Transcendence Orchestra project with Daniel Bean.
Recently dubbed “arguably the finest techno DJ in the world” by Fact magazine, Surgeon is in-demand with DJ mixes for Warp and Fabric. He holds a residency at Tresor (Berlin) and is one half of the British Murder Boys (BMB) with Regis, alongside solo live performances and collaborations with Lady Starlight and Speedy J as ‘Multiples’.
Surgeon is a selector of skill and one of the most inventive DJs out there. More recently, live improvisation has become a bigger part of his performances, with his modular live sets taking center stage.
